That fund was created to help defray the costs of responding to allegations by Chrissy Mazzeo and Patricia Sandoval that have been shown to be untrue.

“The uproar over this legal defense fund is completely driven by a few individuals to make an issue where none exists. The fund was established, on the advice of pre-eminent and experienced lawyers, to comply with all rules during the campaign. It was not then, and is not now, a campaign fund. It did not solicit or accept political contributions. Rather, the funds were used as intended -- to pay legal and accounting expenses related to the allegations at the time.

“Because I believe that the people of Nevada have a right to know about this fund, I have reported the donations and expenses of the fund, even when it was not clear that I had to do so. I received advice on this matter from legal experts and in no way have anything to hide by using a fund-raising process, used by many public officials, that is permitted by law. I will continue to report on that fund as bills are paid for previous legal issues surrounding the now-discredited allegations. As was the intention all along, the legal defense fund will then formally be closed down. That closing and a final report on the fund should occur in the near future.

“I realize that there are some media and political naysayers who will try to create a story or controversy every day, to defeat the goals of my administration or just for the sport of it. The people of Nevada should know that I am committed as ever to carrying out the pledges I made during the campaign. I will not be distracted or derailed from those goals, which include enhancing public education for our children, promoting excellent health care for all of our citizens and increasing employment opportunities in our state.

“An honest review of the real facts of all the allegations that have been made will lead to the conclusion that I have been and remain a hard-working, honest public servant who has never violated the public trust. To those who keep trying to make a controversy where none exits, I say "enough" and let the business of the people of Nevada be done.”

###
Paid for by the Nevada Republican Party
8625 W. Testimony is needed and please send
an e-mail.

Many Nevada citizens have gathered signatures for such praise worthy initiatives
as Keep Our Doctors in Nevada, Tax and Spend Controls for Nevada, People's Initiative
to Stop the Taking of Land, Protection of Marriage Act, Ax the Tax, and the Angle
Property Tax Initiative. We have found that in circulating petitions we must
obey the letter of the law or many signatures will be disqualified. One requirement
is that people print their last name first and then their first name. This
is such an unnatural way to fill out a form that most people begin printing their
first name first even with the instruction to do their last name first. This
causes frustration for the gatherer, rewrites for the signers, but most seriously
the County Clerk does not accept an improperly written name as a verified signature
so the entire effort of collecting that signature is wasted.

In the Clerk's defense, many will look to the signature and try to qualify
it if it is clearly just a mistake of printing the wrong name first. However
the problem arises when signatures are not readable and the first and last name
are not easily determined. For instance a name such as Scott James could easily
be James Scott or Courtney Allen could be Allen Courtney.

SB230 may not be the magic bullet but it certainly will allow the natural
tendency to print the first name first and then the last name. It is our hope
that by passing this simple change some of the problems in gathering and verifying
signatures will be cured. SJR2 Legislative Counsel?s Digest:
This resolution amends the Nevada Constitution, which currently provides for the popular election of justices of the Supreme Court and judges of the district court, to provide for: (1) the initial appointment by the Governor of justices and judges, from candidates recommended by the commission on Judicial Selection; and (2) any subsequent retention of those justices and judges by approval of a ballot question concerning their retention. (Nev. Const. Art. 6, ?? 3, 5) Under
this resolution, if a vacancy occurs in the Supreme Court or a district court for any reason, the Governor appoints a justice or judge from candidates selected by the Commission on Judicial Selection, and the initial term of that justice or judge expires on the first Monday of January following the general election occurring at least 12 months after the justice or judge is appointed. Thereafter, if the justice or judge wishes to serve another term, he must declare his candidacy
for a retention election. If 60 percent or more of the votes cast are in favor of the retention of the justice or judge, he will then serve a 6-year term and must run in a retention election if he wishes to serve another 6-year term. If the justice or judge does not declare his candidacy for the retention election or if less than 60 percent of the votes cast are in favor of his retention, a
vacancy is created at the end of his term, which must be filled by appointment. In addition, this resolution amends the Nevada Constitution to require each justice or judge who has declared his candidacy for a retention election to undergo a review of his performance as a justice or judge. This resolution creates the Commission on Judicial Performance and requires the Commission to perform these reviews. The review of each justice or judge must consist of a review of the record of the justice or judge and at least one interview of the justice or judge. At the conclusion of this review, the Commission must prepare and release to the public a report containing information about the review and a recommendation on the question of whether the justice or judge should be retained.

Washoe Republicans Ready for Election Season

Is it too early to begin talking about the 2008 election season?
